About

Polish-born artist, Joanna Malinowska works is sculpture, video, sound and performance, exploring themes of national identity and its paradoxes, filtered through the lenses of ‘experimental anthropology’ and quixotic ventures into the Western Musical Cannon. Her projects have been exhibited nationally and internationally, at venues such as the Sculpture Center and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton in Paris; Saatchi Gallery and Nottingham Contemporary in Great Britain; Yokohama Museum of Art in Japan; and Zachęta — National Gallery of Art in Warsaw.

Having worked individually for many years, Malinowska currently collaborates with her partner, C.T. Jasper. In 2015, the duo represented Poland at the 56th Venice Biennale with the project: Halka/Haiti 18°48’05”N 72°23’01”W, which was later shown at the the Göteborg Biennial for Contemporary Art, Ghetto Biennale in Port-au-Prince, the Krasnoyarsk International Biennale, and many other exhibitions around the world, from Japan to Australia. Among their past projects are The Emperor’s Canary, a sound installation commissioned by the High Line in New York and later presented at the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France; the installations In Savage Society (GGM, Gdańsk) and Jurassic Garden (Le Guern, Warsaw) and commissioned for the latest edition of the Triennale Brugge, Who is Afraid of Natasha?, a film and public space installation.

A graduate of the sculpture departments at Rutgers University and Yale School of Art, Malinowska has received awards from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, among others. She is represented by CANADA gallery in New York, and her works can be found in many private and museum collections around the world, including the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, the Saatchi Gallery in London, the Vehbi Koç Foundation in Istanbul, and the Zachęta National Art Gallery in Warsaw.
